Doing Nothing

Is Being Productive

Have you found your “do nothing”, “lay like broccoli” thing?

Vivian: Let’s watch old movies all night… we’ll just veg out in front of the TV.

Edward Lewis: Veg out?

Vivian: Yeah. Be still like vegetables. Lay like broccoli.

Edward Lewis: Look, I’ll tell ya what. I’ll be back. We’ll do broccoli tomorrow. ~From the movie Pretty Woman

We are still human beings and not robots even with all this technology at our fingertips! We cannot be on “ON” 24/7/365. We have limits when it comes to managing, processing and doing. Please stop the crazy busyness!

Do you think about why you are having a bad day? When all you want to do is get back home, climb into bed and call it a day. Especially when everything seems to go wrong and nothing is easy let alone falling into place. We all have those days that are pushing our limits!

  • Stress, anxiety and tension.
  • Being “on” and “over” abc, xyz.
  • Brain on a continuous loop.
  • Disruptions and distractions.
  • Mood, attitude, behavior alters/changes.
  •  Heading towards burn out.

First, do not let that become a new state of being. Second, stop before you take action that you will later regret.

Give yourself a break and make time for yourself! It is okay to take 5 to breathe, stretch and clear your mind. It is okay to use the time you earned to take a day off. The mind and body need R&R!

  • It can be good for your whole well being.
  • It can be relaxing and re-energizing.
  • It can be restful and refreshing.
  • It can be inspiring and motivating.
  • It can get the creative juices flowing.

Remember Saturday mornings as a kid eating your bowl of cereal in front of the TV watching cartoons. I enjoyed the old school cartoon classics, like Wile E Coyote and Road Runner, Tom and Jerry, etc. Netflix binge anyone! What are you currently in to?

Sometimes it is nice to add in a do nothing buddy! To share and connect in doing something you both enjoy and love. To laugh, play and have fun. When was that last time you laughed so hard it was like a release to your whole being?

  • Reading a book or wandering the local library or book store.
  • Laying a blanket down and watching the clouds.
  • Taking in the arts.
  • Breathing/Meditating.
  • Getting curious and exploring.
  • Getting lost in the city, great outdoors or anything in between.
  • Doing Absolutely NOTHING!!!

The possibilities are endless in doing nothing!

Do You Hear It?

That Place That Calls To You,

That Place That Speaks To You

Your favorite spot to kick back and relax! Be it indoors or outdoors. Be it by yourself or with your greatest someone or a group of your greatest someones. To just BE!

To reconnect with yourself and recharge your whole being! Your energy is connected to your wellness as well as your happiness. Think about how you use your energy!

  • Why does relaxation and rest seem complicated at times?
  • Why does it not seem natural to obtain?
  • What is wrong with doing nothing?

Figure out what works best for you to relax! Think about what relaxes you. Then create it for yourself!

My Top 3

  • Adventuring with my greatest someone aka my adventure partner.
  • Getting outside to wander and explore (maybe with camera in hand).
  • Kicking back and doing what I love (i.e. sitting on the beach, riding my bike, reading a good book, watching a movie, etc.).

Think about connecting to your breath. Your heartbeat decreases. Your whole being expands. You find that calm and reset the balance from within yourself!

Think about your feet connecting to the ground. You stand and take notice of what is going on around you. Your pace changes. Your mind surrenders and starts to wander!

Think about your senses. Think about the light and the shade. Think about the sights, the sounds and the smells. Think about your interior and exterior landscapes. What are you taking in!

What is calling and speaking to you? What feels best to you? What feels good to you? Remember to be mindful and be in the present moment!

Here’s to Practicing  . . . Here’s to Coming Back for More of What Feels Best and Good To You & Your Whole Being . . . Love to Hear Your Thoughts, Please Share.

Making Time

For a 1:1 With Yourself

Do you schedule one-on-ones with yourself?

  • Making time for yourself.
  • Loving yourself.
  • Caring for your whole being.
  • Taking a break.
  • Relaxing and resting.
  • Moving and stretching.

My Top 3

  1. Being outdoors and becoming one with nature.
  2. Being active and moving the whole being.
  3. Being positive.

Being outdoors is grounding! I can tune into my surroundings and tap into my senses. Being in the quiet and stillness is refreshing! I can reconnect and recharge my whole being.

Being outdoors is a great way for me to be active and move my whole being too! I tune into my breathing to find my balance and pace. I can move freely! I am no longer behind the wheel or sitting at a desk. Remember to add movement throughout your day because that sedentary thing is not good for you and your body after hours and hours! Walking, using the stairs, playing . . .

Being positive is a good practice! It is not hard and it is not easy. Some things take time and others do not. Some things take energy and others do not. Keep practicing to progress and see what works best for you!

I feel better when I think good and positive as well as healthier and happier! I do not feel that push and pull and tension and frustrated stress. I am learning to release, let go and move on. Getting out of your head and following your heart!

Love yourself and love what you do! Finding that inspiration, motivation and passion. Finding that balance between saying yes or a strong no in order to do what is best for you. Finding those healthy boundaries and creating the space you need. Finding the best use of your time and energy. Quality vs. Quantity!

All of these things helps in getting ample relaxation and rest too! An added bonus!

Relax

Check This Out!

I recently read an article by Dr. James S. Gordon called A Doctor’s Top 5 Ways to Relax Naturally. Dr. Gordon is the founder and director of The Center for Mind-Body Medicine (CMBM) and author of Unstuck. All types of people feel “stuck” and it is not just depression, but anxiety, frustration, worry and stress-related too. From adults to even children. There is also the feeling of loneliness and not feeling the love due to being hurt and/or a lapse in or lack of trust.

There is a correlation between relaxation and meditation as well as nutrition and exercise.

Relaxing . . .

  1. Soft Belly Breathing
  2. Talking a Walk
  3. Perusing a Book Store
  4. Mindful Eating
  5. Thanking Nature

I was surprised to discover that I currently do all five.

#1 – Soft Belly Breathing

“It’s a simple way of quieting the stress and fight or flight responses, which are major contributors to anxiety, depression and chronic illness.”

I learned soft belly breathing through exercising and find it beneficial to do throughout the day too. I need a quiet place to go to breath though. Otherwise I cannot focus on my breathe and quiet my crazy mind. I find my thoughts wandering at times and either reign them in or just let them go.

Breathe slowly and deeply in through your nose and out through your mouth with your belly soft and relaxed.

I am not a fan of my anxious awkward being let alone the reactive one that tries to rear its ugly head at times. I need to pause and take a breathe in order to think instead of just being reactive. I communicate more effectively and make better decisions. I find myself considering the other person’s feelings and coming from a place of thoughtfulness and kindness.

Opening . . .

#2 – Taking a Walk

I do a good majority of sitting throughout the week for work and commuting. I need to move and walk and take the stairs multiple times a day. I need to get up to stretch and breathe. Moving just feels good after sitting and sometimes we sit for too long of a period of time.

Wandering . . .

#3 – Perusing a Bookstore

There is nothing better for me than perusing a bookstore and/or cooking/kitchen store! I can get lost as well as get my creative side going. I like to check out the new releases, cooking and travel sections. I like to check out the gadgets, table ware and linens. I can wander and peruse to my heart’s content!

Perusing . . .

#4 – Mindful Eating

My idea of mindful eating is taking the time to savor and enjoy what I am eating. I do the hoover method enough throughout the week. It is nice to slow down, sit down and enjoy good food and good company for an hour or so. I enjoy perusing the grocery store as well as taking the time to cook at home.

Savoring . . .

#5 – Thanking Nature

For me being out in nature is a stress reducer and a mood booster!

Nature also gives us abundance that we need to be thankful for! The farms. The food we eat and enjoy. The green spaces and sense of community. The fauna and flora as well as the light and the water.

Un . . .

 Unplugging

I love unplugging from the every day grind by escaping to the great outdoors! I feel relaxed, refreshed and renewed when outside exploring and adventuring. I feel my pace slow down, my breathe connecting to my whole being again and find my natural balance from the inside out. I love being surrounded by nature to find solitude and solace!

I love standing in the water with my feet in the sand! I feel grounded and connected to my whole being. The sun warming my body! I feel a lightness radiating from my whole being that fills me up.

I HAVE TO unplug and take a break from technology! I start to feel overwhelmed and distracted. Then I feel anxious and stressed out because I cannot keep up the pace. I need to slow down and turn inward to communicate, interact and connect with my whole being!

Unwinding

I love when I can tune into my natural rhythm, especially on the weekends! No alarm clocks or set schedules. Go to bed when I am truly tired and wake up rested! No restlessness and tossing and turning.

I love unwinding through reading! I look at the written words to discover the symbols and overall moral of the story. Another great escape from reality! I enjoy the imagery that comes to me while reading. I love curling up with a great read or my favorite magazine!

I would love to get back into journaling and letter writing again! So cathartic! I do enjoy exploring the card aisle every once in a while. I enjoy picking out stickers and stamps too.

I make the following commitments to myself.

  1. Slowing down and turning inward every day for at least 5 minutes.
  2. Connecting to my breathe and my whole being throughout the day.
  3. Living an active and healthy lifestyle.
  4. Spending quality time with my greatest someone and adventure partner.
  5. Taking time for myself and my needs every day for at least 5 minutes.
