San Francisco

A Tour

San Francisco is a great place to explore and adventure! The city pretty much has something for everyone. I enjoy the hustle and bustle and watching it too. I know I ate my fair share of bread and fish and seafood while there.

City Views

I know I am NOT Waldo when it comes to blending in! I SCREAM tourist with the camera either strapped around my neck or stuck to my face.

Pier 39

I am such a sucker for the sea lions on Pier 39! I checked out the sea lions not once but twice on this trip.

  • The sea lions arrived in January 1990 and numbered about 10 to 50.
  • Then the sea lions numbers rose (more than 300) due to the supply of herring, available dock space and protected environment.
  • The sea lions can number up to 900 in the Winter and in the Summer months migrate to the Channel Islands for breeding season.
  • In recent years a small group stays year round at Pier 39’s K Dock.

The Cliff House, Sutro’s

First of all the Cliff House is a restaurant with Sutro’s on the lower level. This restaurant is perched on the headland above the cliffs north of Ocean Beach. The restaurant overlooks the former Sutro Baths. Second of all Sutro’s is a true formal dining experience with unbelievable gourmet eats. Sutro’s offers great views and great ambiance. We enjoyed a 3-course meal with a great bottle of wine and loved every morsel and sip. We pretty much closed the place down too.

Cliff House has had 5 major incarnations since 1858.

  1. Samuel Brannan built the 1st Cliff House when he bought $1500 of lumber salvaged from a ship that was on the basalt cliffs below.
  2. The 2nd Cliff House was built in 1863 and leased to Captain Junius G. Foster. The 2nd Cliff House hosted horseback riders, travelers by carriage, small game hunters, and picnickers for the day.
  3. The 2nd Cliff House was bought in 1883 by Adolph Sutro who became a multimillionaire by solving the problems of ventilating and draining the mines of the Comstock Lode. Cliff House was damaged by a dynamite explosion when the schooner, Parallel, ran aground on January 16, 1887. Then later destroyed on Christmas night 1894 due to a defective flue. The 2nd Cliff House lasted for 31 years with three Presidents and various world famous visitors.
  4. Adolph Sutro built the 3rd Cliff House in 1896. A seven story Victorian Chateau built below his estate on the bluffs of Sutro Heights. The work began on the famous Sutro Baths in a small cove north of the restaurant. The Sutro Baths included six of the largest indoor swimming pools, a museum and a skating rink. The Sutro Baths burned to the ground on June 26, 1966.
  5. The 3rd Cliff House survived the 1906 earthquake and then burned to the ground on September 7, 1907. The 3rd Cliff House lasted 11 years. Dr. Emma Merritt, Sutro’s daughter, commissioned a rebuilding of the restaurant in a neo-classical style that is the basis of the structure today. George and Leo Whitney purchased the Cliff House in 1937 to compliment their Playland-at-the-Beach attraction. Cliff House was remodeled into an American roadhouse. Playland was closed in the 1960s and the museum of 20th century penny arcade games was moved into the basement of Cliff House (now located at Fisherman’s Wharf). An extensive renovation in 2003 restored Cliff House to its 1909 appearance.
  • Playland-at-the-Beach or just Playland began in 1928 and was a 10-acre seaside amusement park located next to Ocean Beach. It closed Labor Day weekend in 1972.
  • More than 30 ships have been pounded to pieces on the southern shore of the Golden Gate below the Cliff House.
  • The Cliff House became part of the Golden Gate National Recreational Area in 1977.

Chinatown

I usually find myself on Grant Avenue when exploring Chinatown. I enjoy tasting new foods and love having lunch here.

  • The oldest Chinatown in North America.

Haight & Ashbury

I was not aware that the Haight-Ashbury Street Fair was going on, so enjoyed checking it out! I think the majority of us know about the area because of the 1960s hippie movement. Just think about the history made here, the famous people that call(ed) this area home and what is taking place in this neighborhood and area right now! This was one of the few neighborhoods that was spared from the fires following the 1906 earthquake.

  • The street names commemorate Henry Haight (pioneer and exchange banker) and Munroe Ashbury (a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors). These two men had a hand in the planning of the neighborhood as well as the Golden Gate Park.
  • Imagine back in the day this area was farms and sand dunes!
  • Home to the Haight-Ashbury “Painted Lady” Victorians on Waller Street near Masonic Avenue.

Taking Baby Steps and Moving Forward Again!!!

Your Moral Compass

Is Part of Your Life’s Journey

Your morals and values are very much a part of you and your journey through life. Every day you are faced with choices and decisions to make. Your character plays a part in the choices and decisions you make. Sometimes you get it right and other times maybe not so much, but that is okay. That is part of living your life!

Moral Compass:  Anything that serves to guide a person’s decisions based on morals and values.

Good from Bad & Right from Wrong! You get this, but not all choices and decisions are black and white. Sometimes your emotions and behaviors try to take over control. Sometimes you stray and lose your way. Sometimes you stay true to your morals and values. For the most part you want to live a great life with good choices and decisions every day.

North – Integrity

South – Forgiveness

East – Compassion

West – Responsibility

I want to live a good life and be a positive force in my life and to others. I need to work on my South and be a little more forgiving to myself and others. I need to find the trust again in my North. I think the East and West are in good balance in my life.

An Alter Ego

a.k.a

Have you thought about creating an alter ego? Do you already have an alter ego? What is his or her name? I would love to hear about your alter ego.

I am talking about another side to your personality. Maybe different from the one that most people know. Sometimes I call it my “inner child” or my “inner creative person”. Sometimes you need to spice life up and have some dang FUN!

My alter ego is “The CravesAdventurer”! Mainly my “inner adventurer and explorer”. A world traveler (not really, but I can dream). Someone that has been with me since childhood that I still let out to play in adulthood!

Here’s to Grabbing Life & Making Life Experiences!!!

The Adventuring Life

So Many Adventures

I love adventuring through life with my greatest someone! I cannot wait for the next adventure too! I enjoy having an adventure partner because it is so much fun to have a sidekick along for the ride. I have the ability to see an adventure from another perspective too. Certainly do not want to miss a thing!

So Many Places

There are so many places to adventure to!

2013 is all about NEW Adventures for the CravesAdventurer! I did a little twist in February 2013 by checking out Kauai, Hawaii for the 1st time and returning to Oahu, Hawaii.

Exploring Kauai (Photo by RSheridan)

2013 is about Beer Festivals too! I attended the 17th Annual Boonville Beer Festival in Anderson Valley (Mendocino County) in May 2013. I am super excited and cannot wait for the Beer Festivals of all Beer Festivals happening this Summer! Looking into Fall Beer Festivals too.

Marathon of Brews (Photo by RSheridan)

DO NOT stop reading my blog though because wineries, wine tastings and wine events are very much on the “Adventure Schedule” this year too! The CravesAdventurer is a true wino at heart!

There are places you want to go back to time and time again for more adventure too!

The Top 5

  • California Wine Regions
  • California Coast & Oregon Coast
  • The Hawaiian Islands (So far . . . Oahu, Maui, Kauai)
  • Portland, Oregon
  • Yosemite National Park

Mr. Craves and the CravesAdventurer HEART California Wines!

I cannot get enough of the Coast! The sun, sand and surf draws me in and leaves me wanting more. I enjoy taking a walk on the beach to see the sun rise. I love taking a seat with a glass of wine in hand to watch the sun set. The Coast very much recharges and reenergizes me!

The Big Blue Ocean (Photo by RSheridan)

Oahu holds a special place in my heart! 1st Big Adventure with Mr. Craves and have been lucky to go back in 2012 and 2013. I love spending quality time together to reconnect with each other. I enjoy exploring the islands and discovering new things together. My favs so far . . . North Shore of Oahu, Kailua Beach & Lanikai Beach (Oahu), Island of Kauai (want more of it!), and of course the rainbows and sunsets!

I fell madly in love with Portland on the 1st adventure there in April 2012 and cannot wait to go back! I love the sense of community and each community has an identity that is unique. I enjoy the green spaces that the city has to offer, especially in the various communities. Then there is the breweries and the great eats!

Yosemite is the Creation of All Creations! I find myself lost for words at times in describing Yosemite. It is the ultimate experience to see it and soak it all in. Yosemite will imprint itself on your brain, steal your heart and become very much a part of your soul!

So Little Time

So Many Adventures, So Many Places, So Little Time – Oh My! Where does one even START!

My Top 3 Ways to Adventure

  1. Be a tourist in your home town.
  2.  Check out a neighbor State.
  3. Pick at least 1 Adventure and do it!

I love adventuring! You can pretty much make anything and everything an adventure if you so desire. I enjoy being a creature of habit at times, but I need to stretch my comfort zone too. Just have FUN!

IMAGINE how much adventuring can open up your world! Envision going for a walk and think about how much you can see and do while on foot. In learning and exploring you experience growth. In being open to new experiences you gain life experiences. Curiousity is a GREAT asset to have in living a life full of adventures!

(Photos by RSheridan)

Trust me when I say it can become addictive too. I am the CravesAdventurer and I CRAVE . . . Just how you go about adventuring is really up to you. From Arm Chair Adventuring to Getting Out and Doing It Adventuring and Every Adventuring in Between.  GET out there when it comes to adventuring!

What Adventures Are You Up To? Please Share, Love to Hear! Adventure Awaits . . . GO! Happy Adventuring!!!

Summer Loving

Having A Blast!

I am like a kid on Summer Vacation when it comes to the months of June, July and August! I enjoy taking that Big Summer Trip too! I love the sunshine, the blue skies and escaping to the great outdoors.

I focus on relaxation not the crazy busyness! I schedule in plenty of me time as well as time to spend with my greatest someones. The library book pile tends to increase and if the TV is on I prefer to take in a good movie. I love to just take time to breathe and soak in every minute of the summer months!

I feel more lightness and find a slower pace! I enjoy taking in the local events throughout the week and on the weekend. Nothing better than strolling through the farmer’s market. I love to savor it all because the summer days tend to fly by!

Here’s to a GREAT SUMMER!!!

Here’s to Finding Inspiration in Every Day!!!

A Passion to Write Creatively

Started With a Desire to Read

I had a desire to read at a very young age. I wanted to soak up the words and explore the meaning behind the words. I was a very imaginative child and books let my imagaination go wild! I remember being so excited when the time came to transition from picture books to chaper books. Plus do not get me started on obtaining my very own library card for the 1st time!

I always have a book or two with me with my place marked ready to read when I have a free minute or two! I usually have a book or two in the waiting, so I am not without a book to read. Otherwise I will be reading just about anything and everything I can get my hands on. I am very much a book junkie!

I had my “ah-ha” moment reading Little Women! I wanted to be Jo so badly. First, she was a tomboy like me. Second, she was full of joy, spoke her mind and was not the most graceful. She had a bit of a wild streak that caused a little trouble in her trying to fight for her individuality, especially a girl growing into a woman in a man’s world. I could totally relate! Third, Jo loved literature, both reading and writing. Fourth, Jo pursued a literary career in New York City. I so wanted to head to the “big city” to find that studio apartment where I could spend my days reading and writing!

My desire to read turned into a passion to write creatively! If Jo could do both, so could I. I wanted more pencils and notebooks than I could use! I wanted to learn everything about writing, especially creative writing. I had a natural attraction to the written word!

Throughout the years my intensity to read has ebbed and flowed. Life was knocking the book out of my hand and hurting my nose in the process. My creative writing was put on simmer or reverted to the back burner. Life was telling my brain to engage in living life, so I could write and share about my many adventures.

Then I discovered blogging and talk about unleashing that passion to write creatively once again. I found my “big city” studio apartment where I could spend time reading and writing! I found an outlet that opened my world up. I found that place where I could let me creative imagination flow into words and posts and stories of adventure!
