Lyon Arboretum

Stepping Into the Rainforest

The Lyon Arboretum is a 200-acre arboretum and botanical garden managed by the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Dr. Harold Lyon was the original director of the arboretum, a botanist from Minnesota, who in his tenure planted nearly 2,000 species of trees. The arboretum was renamed in his honor after his death in 1957.

The Hours of Operation are Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and closed on Sundays. Admission is a Donation of $5.00 per person.

The Lyon Arboretum has an extensive tropical plant collection that it continues to develop as well as an active seed bank. The tropical plant collection emphasizes native Hawaiian plants, like palms and bromeliads. The arboretum is so lush and green with pops of colors. It is in a nutshell an outdoor laboratory! Conservation, Preservation and Restoration!

Check Out Lyon Arboretum’s What’s Blooming Now on their website before you go! I spent about two hours exploring and could have explored for a few more hours.

The Various Gardens are:

  • Native Hawaiian Garden
  • Bromeliad Garden
  • Herb and Spice Garden
  • Mapes Garden
  • Beatrice Krauss Ethnobotanical Garden
  • Betty Ho Memorial Garden
  • Stemmermann Memorial Garden
  • Young Memorial Garden

Lovey Photography

From May 2015 - March 2016, Sherry and Sean traveled the country and lived in a 5th wheel R.V. They took pictures, hiked mountains, and saw amazing sights. They are now settled in Fort Myers, Florida and are continuing to take pictures and seeing amazing sights. This is the blog of their journey from leaving St. Louis and starting an adventure, to living in Florida and doing photography. Enjoy the stories, and leave comments if you have one to share!
