Smart & Healthy Snacks
You can snack smart and healthy to keep the hunger beast away! I say smart because you can pretty much have what you want just remember portion and moderation. I say healthy because snacks do not have to be processed. Fresh is Best!
I enjoy a few snacks throughout the day because I do not want to overeat at my main three meals of the day. Your body needs nourishment over starvation. Your brain needs fuel to function too. Much more healthy for your body, mind and spirit!
Do not forget the liquids! Sometimes when your body is telling you it is hungry maybe start with a glass of water or tea. Then see if you are still hungry or not. Stay Hydrated!
Snacks should be:
- Nutrient-rich (vitamins too please)
- High in Fiber
- Low Sugar & Sodium
Put together your own trail mix with unsalted nuts and seeds as well as raisins and dried fruit. Maybe add a little dark chocolate to the mix. Prepare fruits and veggies in snack-sized bags so you can just grab and go. I love this idea because I control the ingredients and the health of my snacks!
How to Choose
Avoid Trans Fat & Added Sugars or Sodium! Read the Nutritional Labels! Especially for products that offer more than one option. Sometimes the original (fully loaded) is better than the all-natural or low-fat options. Read the Ingredients! If I cannot read the ingredients I move on. Read Serving Size Information! Sometimes there is multiple servings, especially in smaller packages.
Stash Some Snacks
Keep healthy snacks with you! Grab an apple, bag up some carrots or almonds, keep yogurt in the fridge, etc. Make sure you have a variety of snack choices available, so you do not stray to the “bad stuff”. Think of all the seasonal fruit and veggies choices available year round!
Set a No Snacking Time
For instance, no snacking after 7 pm! Sometimes all I need is a small glass of unleaded chocolate milk to keep the hunger beast at bay until morning. The hardest part lately for me is eating a small dinner before heading to the gym in the evenings, so I am not eating dinner after 7 pm a few nights a week. It is doable though and you learn to adapt after a few weeks.
Go Ahead and Treat Yourself! Once in a while a fully loaded snack is a special treat. Who knows you may even find yourself going the healthy route! Remember everything in moderation.
