Good Snacking

Smart & Healthy Snacks

You can snack smart and healthy to keep the hunger beast away! I say smart because you can pretty much have what you want just remember portion and moderation. I say healthy because snacks do not have to be processed. Fresh is Best!

I enjoy a few snacks throughout the day because I do not want to overeat at my main three meals of the day. Your body needs nourishment over starvation. Your brain needs fuel to function too. Much more healthy for your body, mind and spirit!

Do not forget the liquids! Sometimes when your body is telling you it is hungry maybe start with a glass of water or tea. Then see if you are still hungry or not. Stay Hydrated!

Snacks should be:

  • Nutrient-rich (vitamins too please)
  • Protein-rich
  • High in Fiber
  • Low Sugar & Sodium

Be Prepared

Put together your own trail mix with unsalted nuts and seeds as well as raisins and dried fruit. Maybe add a little dark chocolate to the mix. Prepare fruits and veggies in snack-sized bags so you can just grab and go. I love this idea because I control the ingredients and the health of my snacks!

How to Choose

Avoid Trans Fat & Added Sugars or Sodium! Read the Nutritional Labels! Especially for products that offer more than one option. Sometimes the original (fully loaded) is better than the all-natural or low-fat options. Read the Ingredients! If I cannot read the ingredients I move on. Read Serving Size Information! Sometimes there is multiple servings, especially in smaller packages.

Stash Some Snacks

Keep healthy snacks with you! Grab an apple, bag up some carrots or almonds, keep yogurt in the fridge, etc. Make sure you have a variety of snack choices available, so you do not stray to the “bad stuff”. Think of all the seasonal fruit and veggies choices available year round!

Set a No Snacking Time

For instance, no snacking after 7 pm! Sometimes all I need is a small glass of unleaded chocolate milk to keep the hunger beast at bay until morning. The hardest part lately for me is eating a small dinner before heading to the gym in the evenings, so I am not eating dinner after 7 pm a few nights a week. It is doable though and you learn to adapt after a few weeks.

Treat Yourself

Go Ahead and Treat Yourself! Once in a while a fully loaded snack is a special treat. Who knows you may even find yourself going the healthy route! Remember everything in moderation.

Getting Fresh

Getting Your Servings

Do you eat fruits and veggies when in season? Do you go the traditional route or try something new? What is the weirdest fruit or veggie you ate? Would you eat it again?

Craving Good Eats

Go For It or Moderation!

I am all for making better food choices and eating healthier. However, there are times where I just Go For It when it comes to craving good eats. Sometimes I even surprise myself that craving good eats leads me in a healthier direction. BONUS!

Which ONE is the Lesser of the 2 Evils – Hmm! (Photos by RSheridan)

I have found for me that limiting, swearing off and banning certain foods just does not work for me. Why?!? The thing you want most is the thing you should not have! It is a vicious cycle and one that could potential control you and what you eat. DO NOT LET IT! There are foods that you may do that with because you can, have the willpower and no longer crave it. That is Great too!

I can admit that I have struggles when it comes to eating healthy. However, I also try not to make a big deal out of it because I want a healthy relationship with food and not develop food issues. Food issues could potentially result in destructive habits, cause stress-induced eating or not eating and contribute to an increase in weight. The issue with food that scares me the most is eating too much of something that is so not good for you!

I am learning that eating healthy DOES NOT mean you have to DEPRIVE yourself! It is really about making better food choices and it starts in the grocery store. Leave it in the store and do not bring it home with you! I know easier said than done at times. Who am I kidding, right!

What are your thoughts about eating healthy or eating in moderation? How is your relationship with food? Should we care or be concerned about our relationship with food or just eat what we like? Love to hear your thoughts!

Young at Heart

Age is Just a Number!

Your zest for life comes from doing it and living it every day! Do not let your age define or stop you from enjoying and taking pleasure in your life. Life is too darn short to dwell on what you cannot do or should not do. Grab Life & Get Out There!

I do not want to relive my 20s; been there done that! I am hitting my stride in life and loving it! I am young at heart and love letting my inner child out to play. One reason I love to travel, explore and adventure.

20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s

I am still trying to find that grown up career where I can do 15 to 20 years! Maybe that is overrated. I am not currently doing what I love 40 hours a week. However, I have plenty of hobbies to fill the void!

Do You Think You Are?

Back on December 5, 2012 I wrote a post called Enough Said. This post is a follow-up to that post to discuss the following question:

How do you let go of the “who I think you should be mentality“?

First of all humans are complex beings with multiple layers! That includes emotions, attitudes and perceptions! That includes having a purpose as to why we are here. It goes deeper than who we are, who is on our family tree and who raised us.

Everyone has an opinion when it comes to who you are, including yourself! Everyone of us has a past, present and future. Everyone of us has some type of culture as well as some type of role in society. How you respond is UP TO YOU!

You are What You Think! OR Not So Much!!!

I know the TRUE me is among the different roles I play or participate each and every day! I try to be TRUE to myself and follow my own heart and mind. Sometimes I find myself in that “who I think you should be mentality” and really try hard not to feed into that. I know I need to be TRUE to my values and beliefs and at times this places me outside my comfort zone.

As a complex being there are times that you need to give yourself pemission to take off one of those multiple layers and let the TRUE you shine! Only you can do that for yourself. Sometimes you have to listen to what is going on inside of you than what is taking place outside around you each and every day! It helps you embrace your True self; the Real person that lives inside of you.

WHO Do You THINK You Are Then???

Embark on your own personal journey and discover yourself! Just imagine the possibilities waiting for you along the way. You may just SURPRISE yourself in finding strengths you never knew you had. AMAZING RIGHT!!!

Here’s to Being YOU!!!

Who Are YOU??? (Photo by RSheridan)

Out of Rooms

Cleaning The “Emotional House”

I have been learning to live in the present and treat each day as a gift! Part of the process is letting go of the crud that clutters my body, mind and spirit; cleaning my “emotional house”. This crud is not important, certainly does not matter and just takes up valuable real estate. The hardest lesson of letting go is when you have NO CONTROL! You either roll with it or stress yourself out.

I want to put my energies into the GREAT things in my life!

Think About . . .

  • Reenergizing Your Body
  • Cleansing Your Mind
  • Lifting Your Spirit
  • Putting Your Heart & Soul into WHAT MATTERS!

How do you know WHAT MATTERS is between you and yourself? You will KNOW when you FIND IT! How do you find your inner strength and emotional freedom? I find it by being true to myself, feeding my body and living life!

Coming Out, Of My Shell That Is! (Photo by RSheridan)

I am not going to say that being open to what life has to offer has been easy for me because you are putting yourself out there. Some people just do not understand and heck there are days I do not even understand it myself. I just get out there and try to be and do the best I can! Yes, it scares me as well as at the same time frees me!

Here’s the KICKER – In Letting Go You are ABLE to Forgive Yourself and Just Move Forward in Your Life! PLUS IT CAN BE FREEING – BONUS PEOPLE!!!

Out of Control

Letting GO of Self-Control

I am learning that part of self-acceptance is letting GO of self-control! I know I feel better when I am in control, however; sometimes that control can do more harm than good, especially to your body, mind and spirit. Learn to Stop, Pause and Take a Breathe at times!

Love this! “Giving up control is sometimes the only way to gain self-control”. Hard Lesson to Learn at times!

I am learning that part of self-control is learning the art of relaxation! Your body and mind have that push-pull thing going on with each other at times. Sometimes your brain just takes over. Stop That Already!

Start Relaxing NOW!

I am learning that part of self-acceptance as well as self-control is trusting your instinicts and five senses. I am hoping by tuning into my instinicts and 5 senses it will improve my body (health), my mind (productivity) and my spirit (happiness)! Self-control as well as willpower are a mind-body response, so instead of reacting and protecting learn to trust yourself through your instinicts and senses.

Like the saying goes trust your gut!

I am finding that feeding into the guilt and shame is just a destructive behavior and habit to have in your life. I would rather spend my energies focusing on being mindful and grateful in my life. I am also finding that being able to forgive yourself is a BONUS when it comes to self-acceptance as well as self-control. Give yourself a break and show yourself a little compassion when you experience a setback, which sometimes you have no control over anyway!

Stress, Anxiety, Temptation – Oh My!

Do I need to say anymore on this and what it does to your body, mind and spirit? I eat junk, cannot sleep, and certainly have a hard time shutting the brain off. I am just a mess having a meltdown, along with a pity party and playing the blame game! Instead I should be picking myself up and be focusing on nutrition, exercise and 8 hours of peaceful rest. Easier said than done at times!

Let’s Stop Beating Ourselves Up and Show Ourselves a Little More Compassion – YOU DESERVE IT!!!

Out of Your Mind

Engage Your Life

I recently read something that just spoke volumes to me. “Get Out of Your Mind and Into Your Life”! Why not? What is stopping you?

How do you put what is in your head into action? I have a hard time with the word some day. Why not turn that idea, hope, dream of some day into today, this month, this year, etc? Just Get Going Already!

Do you just love getting on the open road and putting the pedal to metal on an open stretch? Is that not how one should live their life? Now I am channeling Hager in my head, I can’t drive 55! Drive from Zero to 125 and Just Engage!
