Surly Brewing Company

Happy Halloween Everyone!

Surly

Surly Brewing Company is based out of Brooklyn Center, Minnesota. Surly’s Owner, Omar Ansari, received a homebrew kit as a gift in 1994 and in 2005 a brewery was born.

I had Surly’s Darkness, a Russian Imperial Stout and it slowly grew on me as I drank it. I tasted the flavors of chocolate, coffee and roast. Additional flavors in the Darkness are cherries, raisins, and toffee. The hops is 85 IBU with 9.8% ABV. The color of this beer was like a dark chocolate and it came out of the bottle and into the snifter with a little heft and thickness. What surprised me was not the hops, but the overall sweetness to this brew!

Style:  Russian Imperial Stout

Malt:  Pale Ale, Golden Promise, Crystal, Dark Crystal, Oats, Black, Chocolate, and Roast

Sugar:  Belgian Dark Candi Sugar

Hops:  Columbus, Amarillo, Simcoe

Yeast:  English Ale

I loved the bottle that Darkness came in – pretty cool design!

3rd Stop – Checking Out the Geyser Basin

You might want to consider a Ranger-led Geyser tour of the Old Faithful Geyser Basin. I Did and Learned A Lot! The Geyser Hill Walk is about a 1 1/4 mile walk and takes about 1 1/2 hours. Geyser Hill offers the greatest concentration of geysers.

HUGE Disappointment

Told that the Grand Geyser should be going off this morning (around 10:20 am). So took a seat on the benches at 9:45 am to get ready for the BIG SHOW and waited and waited some more. Left at 11:45 am and here’s the HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT; Grand went off at 12:05 pm – Dang, Bummer!!!

This Place

Speaks To ME

Have you ever had a place draw you in and become a part of your heart and soul? The Mendocino area is that place for me and it is hard to explain because it is more than just the experience of the place. It speaks to me; body, mind and spirit! My blog was created by this place because I “crave” this area and love exploring what is has to offer, especially for me.

This PLACE makes me happy and carefree! I can just lose myself and let go.

Spending Time

With Your Greatest Someone

I have talked about “me” time and going solo, but how about spending time with your greatest someone! That greatest someone that lifts you up and makes you feel great. I enjoy the quality time and just reconnnecting. Do not do enough of it though!

To My Greatest Someone (Photo by RSheridan)

I prefer spending time with my greatest someone in person, face-to-face. When that is not possible I try to remember to pick up the phone instead of shooting off a quick e-mail. I have been slacking a bit and have not been sending out old fashion cards or letters lately. I will have to remember to do that every so often.

Think about how you spend time with your greatest someone. As little distractions as possible; no televisions or technology. Really think about the last time you spent with your greatest someone and had a real conversation. Feels Great Right!

In some ways I think I have lost the art of having a real conversation by phone. I find myself sounding like a robot when I am having a phone conversation. Hello!, Yup, Yup, Yup, Goodbye! I remember the days when an hour would just fly by when having a conversation with a family member or friend or significant other.

Let’s take back the art of real conversation and really connect with another being; human that is!

Discovery

The Craig Thomas Discovery and Visitor Center

Located in Moose, Wyoming. NO Real Moose Sightings, Darn!

A 22,000 square-foot center! An Amazing and Beautiful building that blends with its Natural Surroundings!

An initiative between Grand Teton National Park and Grand Teton National Park Foundation. The auditorium is still in the works; the Foundation is still raising funds and almost there to complete it. I would have loved to sneak a peek as well as a show when there.

This guy is out front greeting visitors! Welcome, Explore & Discover!

Then you are greeted by Mama Bear and her Cubs upon entering the Visitor Center.

I enjoyed the layout of the Discovery Center. You learn about the People, the Place and Protection. So interactive and informative and makes you want to slow down and soak up the knowledge. NO just stopping for a brochure that is for sure!

Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons truly are a place of “wonderment”!

The Discovery Center gets you motivated to get outdoors to discover and explore this breathtaking, beautiful region. I know as a human being that I have a connection to nature that nurtures my heart, spirit and whole being! I find myself reflecting on those pioneers who made it through some of these mountainous areas to create a home. Just blows my mind at times in how they did it!

The center has a large, interactive model of Grand Tetons National Park to show glacier movement and animal migration. I refrained from taking a picture because there were other visitors enjoying and exploring it. Sometimes you just have to put the camera down and do not want to accidently take someone’s picture either.

This is a Place of CAN TOUCH, love that! I enjoyed being able to touch the pelts of the various animals in the region. Have you ever wondered what those tracks are when out in nature? The displays give you track information too.

I dub this piece of art the “Friendly Bear” and LOVE IT!!!

Ruggedness

Grand Tetons National Park

I had no control over the weather while visiting the Grand Tetons. I tried to take photographs through a cloud of wildfire smoke one day and cloudy, overcast, rainy weather the other day. Plus my photos do not demonstrate the ultimate rugged beauty in this Park!

My Yellowstone Top 5

Drumroll Please . . .

I know what you are thinking. A Top 5 for Yellowstone National Park! Just impossible with so much to see and do within the park. Think of it as a snapshot of those experiences that really spoke to me. It is an AMAZING place that one MUST EXPERIENCE FIRST HAND!!!

#1 The Grand Canyon of Yellowstone

Loved Artist Point! AMAZING views of the canyon and falls.

(Photos by RSheridan)

#2 Yellowstone Lake Scenic Cruise (Bridge Bay Marina area)

The boat driver was a hoot and having a naturalist on board was a BONUS!

(Photos by RSheridan)

#3 Hayden Valley

This place took my breathe away and then my excitement level went up when I saw a herd of bison. Luckily I was not the one driving or who knows where my excitement could have taken us; off-roading in Yellowstone is NOT RECOMMENDED!

(Photos by RSheridan)

#4 Ranger-led Hike on the Scenic Lake Overlook Trail (West Thumb Geyser Basin)

Ranger Brian was a wealth of information when it comes to Yellowstone as well as hiking within the park. Hiking in Yellowstone is nothing I have experienced before due to the vastness of wilderness and wildlife within the park. Bear Spray IS Your Peace of Mind when Hiking! We were hiking in bear and mountain lion terrority as well as the end of bison mating season and the beginning of elk mating season. Do I need to say anymore?!?

(Photos by RSheridan)

#5 The Cleopatra Terrace (Mammoth Hot Springs area)

Had one of those days where it became water feature overload. Then I saw the Cleopatra Terrace and experienced the true beauty, the hidden gem among these water features! This terrace just jumps out at you and grabs ahold of you. Your attention is all hers once that happens!
