Welcome to the Annual Barn Blending Party

Nelson Family Vineyards KNOWS how to throw a PARTY!!!

The Winery Staff worked really hard to make this event a success. I think there was less than a handful of staff members to about 75 participants. WAY TO GO & THANKS FOR A GREAT DAY!!!

I got my wish to experience a blending party and had a blast! I have really become a wino over the past 5 years and wanted to try a new experience when it comes to wine. This was the perfect way to have a new experience with wine! I actually got to experiment in creating one of the team’s blend versions; #2.

The ONLY way to kick off a PARTY is with BUBBLES and of course great tasting cheeses!

The 1st time down in the barn was at my first Hopland Passport in the Fall and it was pouring down rain. The day of the blending party in the barn it was a balmy 86 degrees with a slight breeze to the air. A gourmet lunch of salad, rice and chicken was served and the food was delicious, especially the chicken. Of course the real chickens were not aware of what was being served for lunch and decided to crash the party and bring one very vocal rooster with them – ha!

After lunch it was go time and the teams started the wine blending process. Our team was having so much fun blending that we came up with 6 versions and went back to the #3 version as the blend to pass on to the judges. Here’s where the competitiveness comes into play at this party with which blend to pick for judging as well as the team name.

The judges deliberate on each team’s blend and narrow it down to two blends for group tasting and judging. I thought it was great that as participants we had a say in the winning blend. The winning blend becomes the next Barn Blend for the winery and the winners get a case of their winning blend.

Then there was the exhibition with the sheep who actually do the mowing between the vines for this vineyard. I included some pictures below. Enjoy!
